MDC Alliance Statement on the arrests of MDC Alliance leaders

01 August 2020

The MDC Alliance condemns the arrests of National Spokesperson Adv Fadzai Mahere,Acting Chairperson of the Women’s Assembly Hon Mugidho,National Youth Organising Secretary Godfrey Kuraone, councillor Edward Dzeka and many others who were arrested across the country.

We demand their immediate and unconditional release.

The right to peaceful protest is provided for by the Constitution of Zimbabwe. The fact that the illegitimate ZANU-PF government does not like it can not make it legal. Law is not based on the regime’s likes or dislikes.

Arrested MDC Alliance Spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere

Yesterday, across the country, there were a myriad of other unlawful arrests, including that of award winning author Tsitsi Dangarembwa, Mdudusi Matutu’s family members among others.

All these arrests further tarnish an already bad image of our country.

If Mnangagwa and ZANU-PF are serious, they must arrest corruption, state capture, hunger, poverty and economic decay.

The weaponisation of law and systematic targeting of members of the MDC Alliance and dissenting citizens is a sign of desperation. A clear manifestation of an unstable and panicking government.

STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF HARARE MAYOR HERBERT GOMBA

By Adv Fadzayi Mahere    22 July 2020

We have learnt of the arrest of Harare Mayor, Councillor Herbert Gomba. We are yet to be briefed by his lawyers on the reason for his arrest and the full nature of the charges that he faces. Once these are available, we will issue a detailed statement.

We condemn the unconstitutional nature of Mayor Herbert Gomba’s arrest as he was seized by military intelligence officers in the middle of the night in the presence his wife and children. He was not informed of the reason of his arrest

or afforded any of his constitutional safeguards as required by the law. This nocturnal arrest by security agents cannot go unchallenged.

More information will be availed in due course.

Parliamentary Disciplinary Hearings Update

By Hon Daniel Molokele

Daniel Molokele MDC Alliance MP for Hwange and Pro-democracy Lawyer

I would like to confirm that l have been charged by the Parliamentary Privileges Committee on allegations of disrespecting ED.

Yesterday morning, the Committee convened a session but it was postponed to Tuesday 28th July due to various reasons.

I am thus expected to be appear before the Committee again next week together with scores of other colleagues from the MDC Alliance

I need to reiterate that my position remains clear and unequivocal

I do respect the office of the President unconditionally

But what l can not be forced to accept is the LIE that ED is the rightful occupant of the Office of the President

He lost the 2018 presidential elections. Period.

Advocate Nelson Chamisa is the one who should have been declared the winner after he polled over 2.6 million votes.
